PRIVACY & VISIBILITY
Suitable safety films may help hold broken glass together. Performance depends on the film, glass and installation; window film does not prevent theft or make glass unbreakable.
New Zealand rules require the overall visible light transmittance (VLT) of front side windows to remain at least 35%. Overall VLT measures the factory glass and the film together, so a film marked 35% will not necessarily produce a legal 35% overall result. For class MA passenger vehicles, transparent overlays on rear and rear-side windows must also maintain at least 35% overall VLT.
Rear-window rules differ for other vehicle classes, and windscreen overlays are tightly restricted. We assess the vehicle class and existing glass before recommending film. Review the current NZ Transport Agency guidance. Legal information last reviewed August 2026; rules can change.
Questions About Vehicle Window Tinting
What is window tinting?
Window tinting is the application of a thin, protective film to your car windows to reduce heat, glare, and UV rays while enhancing privacy and style.
How dark can my car windows be tinted?
New Zealand regulates the overall VLT of the glass and film together. Front side windows must retain at least 35% overall VLT, while rear-window requirements depend on the vehicle class.
What types of window tinting do you offer?
We offer a variety of window tinting options including automotive, residential, and commercial tinting. Our films range from UV protection to privacy and security films.
How long does the tinting process take?
The duration of the tinting process depends on the type of service and size of the project. Typically, automotive tinting takes a few hours, while residential and commercial projects may take a day or more.
Is window tinting legal in New Zealand?
Yes, provided the finished glazing complies with current NZ Transport Agency requirements. We assess the existing glass, window position, and vehicle class before recommending a film.
What maintenance is required for tinted windows?
Tinted windows require minimal maintenance. It is recommended to avoid abrasive cleaners and to use a soft cloth with mild soap and water for cleaning. Avoid rolling down windows for a few days after installation to allow the film to cure properly.
